On a hot day or after a full day’s hike, if you’re looking to cool off, head towards Jukkasjärvi and take the road to Paksuniemi. Along this route, you’ll find a lovely beach called “Ahaviken,” where you can swim in the Torne River itself!
Ahaviken is a child-friendly, shallow sandy beach popular among locals during the hottest days. The river water is usually cold, so many prefer to swim at a spot known as “Bäcken” (The Stream), which, as the name suggests, is a stream under the road between Jukkasjärvi and Paksuniemi with significantly warmer water.
Note that these are natural swimming spots without lifeguards, so keep an eye on your children.
Tips!
Next to the stream, there’s a BBQ area where you can cook lunch or even dinner. Bring sausages or marshmallows, or simply enjoy the warmth of the fire after a swim in the stream.
