Idjastállu – Northern lights and reindeer

A silent night. Sparkling stars, creaking snow and flaming northern lights dancing across the sky. A guide who softly tells legends from the past. This tour offers an easily accessible evening meeting with reindeer, Aurora Borealis and traditional Sámi storytelling – within walking distance from Reindeer Lodge and Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi village.

The northern lights can neither be hunted nor ordered. All it takes is patience. Márkanbáiki, the meeting place at Jukkasjärvi church, is with its mythical history the perfect arena to wait for their display. Here we meet when darkness has fallen in order to make a short torchlit walk down to the lávvu-tent where we wait for the northern lights.

We visit our reindeer and feed them with lichen; a great opportunity to photograph the reindeer. Then we gather around the fireplace where old times come to life in form of Sámi fairy tales and stories. The mysterious character Stállu is a creature that is found in many stories connected to nature and life in Sápmi and arouses emotions and thoughts among the audience.

We make coffee and tea and enjoy fascinating conversations. If the night is clear, you will see thousands of stars and, if you are lucky, even a magnificent aurora borealis dancing in an unforgettable and epic show.

The tour starts and ends outside Jukkasjärvi church. A limited number of return transfer spaces can be booked from Kiruna. Loan of winter gear are included in the transfer rate. We recommend all guests to put on their warmest clothes to be able to enjoy the night, regardless of temperature.

The tour is adapted to prevailing weather conditions. Even if the chance of seeing the northern lights is high, it can not be guaranteed because it is a natural phenomenon. This tour has been awarded Nature’s Best Sweden, Sápmi Experience and is Sustainable Arctic Destination certified.
